The wage premium of foreign education: New evidence from Australia

چکیده
The Wage Premium of Foreign Education: New Evidence from Australia We study whether Australian employers recognise immigrants’ education acquired abroad, and if so how. Using data from the Longitudinal Surveys of Immigrants in Australia, we apply interval regression to model migrant hourly earnings. We find substantially higher returns from human capital obtained in Australia and other OECD countries compared with nonOECD countries. These results suggest that the transfer of human capital acquired abroad is mediated by the country in which it was acquired, as found for Israel (Friedberg (2000) and the US (Bratsberg and Ragan (2002)). The results also suggest that immigrants from nonOECD countries are the ones who can gain the most from obtaining further education in Australia, and that targeted rather than generic policies in this area could reduce the extent of the education-occupation mismatch amongst immigrants. The Ownership Structure of Offshoring and Wage Inequality: Theory and Evidence from China
We document three striking facts that pertain to the impact of globalization on wage inequality in China: (a) the college wage premium in manufacturing stayed flat before China’s accession into the WTO in 2001, but rose dramatically thereafter; (b) since the accession, the growth in processing exports of foreign-owned firms has far surpassed the growth of joint ventures and Chinese-owned firms;...
متن کاملDo Foreign Firms Really Pay Higher Wages? Evidence from Different Estimators
We contribute to the literature on Foreign Direct Investment and labour markets by examining wage differentials between domestic and foreign firms, drawing on a large Portuguese matched employer-employee panel. Using OLS, the foreign-firm premium is large and significantly positive but falls substantially when firm and worker controls are added. Moreover, the premium also does not vary monotoni...

For this purpose, they use firm-level data from 16 European countries over the time period 1999–2006. Combing propensity score matching techniques with difference-in-differences (DID) estimators the authors estimate positive wa...

In this paper, we first describe the 1990 DEED, the most recently constructed matched employeremployee data set for the United States that contains detailed demographic information on workers (most notably, information on education). We then use the data from manufacturing establishments in the 1990 DEED to update and expand on previous findings, using a more limited data set, regarding the mea...
